The Magic of Christmas in Florence

Christmas in Florence begins early, filling the city with an irresistible charm.

By late November, the streets of the historic center start to glow with golden lights, shop windows dress up for the holidays, and the air fills with sweet, familiar scents. Strolling along Via Tornabuoni, Piazza della Repubblica, and the Duomo, Florence slowly reveals its festive spirit — refined, radiant, and wonderfully welcoming. Every corner becomes a little scene of enchantment, every square a stage where tradition meets the timeless beauty of the Renaissance.
Hotel Orto de’ Medici blends perfectly into this magical atmosphere, preparing to welcome the season with its signature elegance. From mid-November, the spaces of our boutique hotel are warmed by lights and decorations that recall the story of its historic garden — the very Giardino di San Marco where, according to tradition, the young Michelangelo first met Lorenzo de’ Medici. Garlands, golden details, and shades of green inspired by nature accompany our guests in an atmosphere of pure wonder.

A Christmas of Art and Lights

During the holiday season, Florence turns into a fairytale city — even more beautiful than usual. Its most renowned landmarks light up with artistic installations and projections: palaces, churches, and monuments become open-air works of art during the F-Light – Florence Light Festival, which every year brings new emotions with its plays of light and color that enliven the historic center.
Wandering through the illuminated streets with your head tilted back becomes a truly sensory experience: the lights reflect off the stone facades, the sound of street musicians fills the air, and the aroma of mulled wine mingles with that of roasted chestnuts and freshly baked sweets. In Piazza Santa Croce, the Weihnachtsmarkt — the traditional German-style Christmas market — welcomes you in a warm embrace, among wooden stalls selling handmade crafts, decorations, and culinary specialties from across Europe.

Nativity Scenes, Traditions, and Sweet Temptations

Among Florence’s most beloved Christmas traditions is the Nativity scene. Every church in the historic center displays one, often crafted by local artists and artisans — from the terracotta scene set up on the steps of the Cathedral, to the artistic displays in the Basilicas of Santa Maria Novella and Santo Spirito. A visit to these handcrafted Nativity scenes, whether you’re a believer or not, is a delightful way to admire small masterpieces full of charm.
Next to the Cathedral’s Nativity, in Piazza San Giovanni, stands the city’s large Christmas tree, decorated with warm lights and golden ornaments. As tradition dictates, it’s lit on December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, during a ceremony that officially marks the beginning of the holiday season in Florence. The square fills with music and smiles, and the tree, with its refined glow, radiates a comforting warmth.
And then there’s the taste — the true flavor of the holidays. December is the perfect time to enjoy a tour of Florence’s historic pastry shops, where you can savor handmade panettone, crisp cantucci di Prato, or a creamy hot chocolate with a view of Piazza della Signoria. Stopping at Gilli, opposite the antique carousel, or Rivoire, the historic café overlooking Palazzo Vecchio, is a cherished winter ritual for Florentines — an unmissable indulgence we highly recommend if you visit the city in winter. All around, the glowing streets invite you to wander leisurely, taking in the best of Florence at its most enchanting time of year.
